Overview

The Internal Revenue Service and the Illinois Department of Revenue will begin to accept filings for individual tax returns on Monday, January 29, 2024.

The deadline to file is April 15, 2024.

File your taxes online - 

Due to mail delays and IRS staffing issues, processing paper tax returns could take 6–8 weeks or longer. Taxpayers are encouraged to file electronically. You will usually receive your refund within 3 weeks of the date when the IRS receives your return, even faster if you elect to have it directly deposited into your checking or savings account.

Get Your Tax Record

Missing a document you need to file your tax return? Want to verify an item on a previous return? You can order copies of tax records from the IRS including transcripts of past tax returns, tax account information, wage and income statements, and verification of non-filing letters. 

You may register to use Get Transcript Online to view, print, or download all transcript types.

If you're unable to register, or you prefer not to use Get Transcript Online, you may order a tax return transcript and/or a tax account transcript through Get Transcript by Mail or by calling 800-908-9946. Please allow 5 to 10 calendar days for delivery.

You may also request any transcript by submitting Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return.

IRS Help for Qualifying Individuals 

The IRS offers free basic tax return preparation for lower income, disabled, and limited–English speaking taxpayers. They also provide free tax help for age 60+ with questions about pensions and retirement-related issues.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Locator 

AARP volunteers provide free, individualized tax preparation for low-to moderate-income taxpayers — especially those age 50 and older. 

Check the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Locator to find a location for appointments. The Vernon Area Library is not an AARP Tax-Aide location
